ABOUT

Much mediocrity [in your perception] will likely pass you by here, so feel free to skip this “about me” section without hesitation. What I do want to tell you is that I lost an eye almost six years ago and that I feel a little sympathy for the cruel cyclops Polyphemus, who became completely blind. A cyclopean view is somewhat vulnerable, but I have a completely different and new view of the world and things. The lack is compensated by focal vision and creates a distance between myself and the painting. Clear and realistic forms are beginning to affect me less, while abstraction is increasingly creeping into my work. It is a remarkable process that leads you to new works. Whether other people will follow me enthusiastically in this transformation is the question. I look forward to any reaction [e.g. via this website]. I have experienced for myself that a cyclops [one-eyed] sees differently. Colour perception, focus, depth perception and [dis]harmony are not the same as those of a two-eyed person. But enough about that. I have an almost obsessive preference for contrasting colours that are approximately 180 degrees apart on the colour wheel. I cannot hide my training in free graphics, and often whimsical and straight lines appear that are often perpendicular to each other. Intuition is my driving force; I almost never have a composition or concept in mind when I start a work. I also have an unconscious preference for “gestalten”, and viewers often notice various other things that I never thought of in advance. I love noise, grit and flat textures. I work according to a specific scenario: I sketch a few random lines and colour fields, which I scan and then edit digitally... In many cases, this is where my work comes from. I have it digitally printed on canvas and then I varnish or paint almost random parts or sometimes I stick all kinds of material onto the canvas. But almost as often, I start directly with acrylic on the blank canvas. I myself have a preference for abstract expressionism [what a strange name] and similar styles. Along with wonders such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Frans Kline, Robert Rauschenberg, I also love Pierre Alechinsky and the entire Cobra movement and so many others like Matisse, Wouters, Spilliaert... I am aware that I have found my place far below them.
